Donald Trump Is the New Jimmy Carter — Just Check the Pump

Jimmy Carter didn’t invent high gas prices. He just became the face of them — lines around the block, Middle East shock, a presidency defined at the pump.
Donald Trump spent years turning that memory into a weapon. Carter equaled weakness. Carter equaled energy failure. Carter equaled “America held hostage” by foreign oil and bad management.
Then Trump got the Oval Office back, lit a war with Iran, watched the Strait of Hormuz choke the world’s oil, and started sounding like a man negotiating with a pump he can’t control.
Gas averaged about $4.22 a gallon this week — highest since June. Crude punched back through $100. AAA says don’t expect the usual post–Labor Day drop. And the president’s honest timeline? Oil relief may land after November.
Carter had gas lines. Trump has a midterm and a promise that prices will fall “precipitously” — later.
The contrast they don’t want you to notice
The campaign product: Drill, baby, drill. Energy dominance. Sub-$2 (or at least sub-$3) gasoline as proof of competence. Inflation as the other guy’s brand.
The governing product: A war launched in February that was supposed to last “four to five weeks” and is now past six months. Iranian retaliation. Shipping risk in the Strait of Hormuz (about a fifth of world oil flow before the fighting). Oil volatility as a “small price to pay.” Gas stuck over $4 while voters say cost of living is issue No. 1.
That’s not a vibes problem. That’s a receipts problem.
Trump told Truth Social oil would drop hard when America “wins” the war — three dollars, then under two. Then he told reporters it’ll take “a little bit longer than the midterm.”
Then, at the convention week, the same week he floated $5,000 checks if Republicans keep Congress, he warned supporters the war — and the pain at the pump stretches past Election Day.
Carter asked Americans to sacrifice for an energy future. Trump asks them to wait until after they vote.
Carter’s ghost, Trump’s mirror
Carter’s 1979 crisis was Iranian revolution, supply shock, shortages, and inflation that still defines his brand. Adjusted for today’s dollars, 1979 gas averaged roughly the high-$3s — ugly then, ugly in memory forever.
Trump’s 2026 crisis is Iranian war (his war), supply shock, prices back over $4, oil over $100, and an approval rating on the economy deep underwater. Same region. Same commodity. Same political death spiral: when the gallon becomes the presidency’s grade, history is not kind.
The cruelty of the comparison isn’t that Trump is Carter on policy. It’s that Trump built his identity on never being Carter — and then delivered Carter’s nightmare with better branding and worse timing.
Carter inherited an energy system he couldn’t magically unbreak.
Trump promised he could magically unbreak it, then chose a conflict that made the Strait a weapon, told Americans high oil was a bargain for “Safety and Peace,” and scheduled cheap gas for sometime after you reelect his Congress.
That’s not toughness. That’s Carter with a Truth Social account.
The hypocrisy, clean
Republicans spent a generation treating “Carter” as a slur — code for incompetence, malaise, and paying too much to fill the tank.
So fill the tank. Look at the number. Look at the war calendar. Look at the president saying relief comes after the midterms while he auctions $5,000 “dividends” for keeping his party in power.
If gas prices are the morality play of American politics, the villain costume doesn’t care which party sewed it.
Donald Trump isn’t haunted by Jimmy Carter.
He’s auditioning for the remake.
